ABOUT THE COMPTON
P-ESL PROGRAM
The Compton P-ESL Program, developed by Arthur J. Compton, Ph.D., Director of the Institute of Language and Phonology in San Francisco (http://www.ajcomptonpesl.com/), is based on more than 25 years of linguistic research and teaching. Dr. Compton originally designed the program as a way to help improve the English speech of foreign-born people for whom English is a second language, and his program has also proven successful for English-speaking clients who want to modify strong regional dialects.
Dr. Compton's work involved scientific analysis of the English pronunciation of several hundred people representing over 100 language backgrounds. He found that "accented English" actually comprised interrelated pronunciation patterns dictated by a person's native language, and that accented pronunciation is composed of a relatively small and predictable system of pronunciation patterns, or error types. These errors taken collectively make up a "foreign accent" and are the reason for difficulties in making oneself understood when speaking English. The Compton Program is a means of modifying and reducing these errors and thus improving one's ability to speak English clearly.
